Imagine working 8 hours to earn only $1 USD a day. Visualize living in a region where 70% of the population suffers from poverty. Now add COVID-19 to the picture, stunting existing sales for many handmade products typically purchased in person by tourists.
This is a reality in rural Mexican communities. Before the emergence of Covid-19, extreme poverty in Oaxaca, Mexico had risen to three times the national rate.
We're here to help change that - while helping communities and families stay safe during the current pandemic.
When you purchase face masks for yourself or for donating, you protect jobs in Oaxaca, reduce the pressures to migrate, and keep indigenous families safer in rural Mexican communities during Covid-19 and future pandemics. Simply choose the number of masks you want to purchase or donate, the style, and we'll do the rest.
You can also send a personalized message to the recipients or the artisans who make them.
Donate face masks where they're needed most in Oaxaca.
With your donation, these handmade face masks will be donated to residents of indigenous rural communities in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Your donation will not only help to keep these local communities safer, but also protect the income of families that would otherwise be lost due to Covid-19.
Our face masks do not offer 100% protection against all diseases, however, our design offers up to 70% protection from viruses 5x smaller than Covid-19.
As Covid-19 is transmitted by drops (often resulting from coughing, sneezing, laughing or talking), it is important to wear protective eyewear as well. It is essential that all the protocols recommended by the authorities be followed, such as washing hands for at least 20 seconds and social distancing. Face masks help reduce the virality of COVID-19 in three ways:
- Decreasing virus spread by infected individuals. The mask traps virus particles on the inside, preventing the virus particles becoming airborne. Protect others.
- Decreasing new infections by uninfected individuals. The mask prevents airborne virus particles being inhaled from the outside. Protect yourself.
- Limiting hand to face contact. The mask puts a physical barrier between potentially contaminated hands and passages to one's lungs.
Our face masks should be washed routinely depending on frequency of use (at least once a day if worn daily). For cleaning and wearing instructions, read more.
